I recently had the honor of being a guest on Carol Kabaale’s podcast, where we dove deep into the realities of podcasting, motherhood, and building a business from scratch. It was an honest, heartfelt conversation about identity, resilience, and what it really takes to show up for your dreams as a mom.
Before diving into the highlights, I want to say how grateful I am that Carol invited me on her platform. She creates such a safe space for real conversations, and I highly encourage you to subscribe to her podcast and watch the full episode, you’ll walk away inspired and supported.Starting a Podcast While Embracing Motherhood
Becoming a mother is beautiful, but it also comes with an unexpected shift in identity. As I shared with Carol, after having my daughter, I hit a moment where I realized:
It’s not about my career anymore—it’s about my child.”
And while I loved being a civil litigation paralegal for over a decade, I couldn’t ignore how much of myself I was losing in the process. Starting my podcast, 9 to 5 Mom with a Pod, became a way to reclaim joy, purpose, and creativity. It wasn’t just a hobby, it was a lifeline.
Podcasting gives moms a way to express themselves, connect with others, and build something meaningful outside of diapers and deadlines.
Start With What You Have, Even If It’s Just Your Phone
A big theme of our conversation was the myth that you need fancy equipment or a perfect plan to start a podcast.
You don’t.
You can start with:
- Your phone
- Your AirPods
- Your voice
- And your willingness to show up
Imposter syndrome is real, but waiting for perfect conditions only delays your growth. The most important step is the first one.
Build Value First, Monetize Authentically Later
One piece of advice I shared is simple but powerful: Don’t start your podcast expecting money in the first year. Start it because it brings you joy.
When you focus on:
- Providing value
- Nurturing your listeners
- Building trust
- And creating real connections
…monetization becomes a natural extension of your work, not a desperate goal.
Tie your podcast to your business. If you’re a photographer, talk about photography. If you’re a coach, let your episodes reflect your message. The podcast becomes a pathway to your services.
Embracing the Forever Hustle as a Mom Entrepreneur
Entrepreneurship isn’t smooth. It’s a constant hustle, especially with children.
But the beauty lies here: You don’t wait for life to get easier. You get stronger.
Challenges still happen, but your resilience grows. That’s what keeps the fire going, even on the hard days.
I choose entrepreneurship every single day because, even though it’s a lot of work, I love it. When your work brings you contentment, you know you’re walking the right path.
The Real Power: Community & Email Lists
Your community is everything.
One thing I emphasized is the importance of:
- Listening to your audience
- Building connection points
- And growing your email list
Email is one of the strongest tools for visibility and monetization. And yes, if you’re looking for new audiences, Eventbrite is one of the best places to be discovered.
You don’t need millions of followers. You need the right followers, those who feel aligned with your message and your mission.
